When Perth welcomes Commonwealth leaders to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) this October, there will be plenty of opportunities for community members to join the celebrations.
CHOGM 2011 will be the biggest international event to be held in Perth for almost 50 years and an array of exciting artistic, cultural and sporting events are being planned to coincide with this significant event.
The first day of the meeting on Friday 28 October has been declared a public holiday with free travel on the Transperth network to allow anyone who is interested to participate in celebrations. A number of public activities are happening in Perth CBD on this day and shopping malls will be open for public holiday trading.
An eight-day arts and culture festival will run from the 23rd October to 30th October with the revitalised Perth Cultural Centre as the centrepiece.
The emphasis of the festival will be on large scale free family activities for the West Australian community. Expect to see exceptional international performers from Commonwealth countries working alongside local artists with as much community involvement as possible.
A key element of the festival will be four days of activity and entertainment, from the 26th October to 29th October in the Perth Cultural Centre which will be called the People’s Space during CHOGM 2011.
Join Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh for a barbecue on the Perth foreshore on Saturday 29 October, the final day of the Royal Visit to Australia.

Schools program
Students across Western Australia can adopt a Commonwealth country as part of the Schools Program conducted through the WA Constitutional Centre throughout 2011. The program will culminate in mini CHOGMs for schools ahead of the real event.
