Case study – Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi
Australia’s largest state Western Australia (WA) offers a host of extraordinary landscapes, people, cultures, events and experiences. Perth, the capital of Western Australia will this year be the third Australian city to host Commonwealth Heads of Government.
As the anticipation and excitement levels grow in the lead up to CHOGM 2011, Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi shines the spotlight on what residents and visitors can expect in October.
“Perth people are proud of their city and want the world to see it in the best possible light,” Ms Scaffidi said.
“People enjoy a high standard of living here. Others hear of our relative prosperity and abundance of natural beauty. Our amazing flora and fauna encourage people to visit us, and I think CHOGM will reinforce this.”
Various events will be taking place to celebrate CHOGM, including the Commonwealth Festival; eight days (23-30 October) of family friendly and free events that celebrate music, culture, film, photography and the people of the Commonwealth.
Ms Scaffidi said event plans were progressing smoothly, and there will be lots of activities for families to get out and about.
Friday 28 October has been declared a public holiday in WA with free travel provided by the Transperth network, this will allow the Perth community to make the most of the exciting opportunities on offer.
“Perth has a very open, safe and friendly environment,” she said.
“It is a fast growing city, both in terms of population and influence. Commonwealth leaders are taking more notice of Perth and we believe the international media exposure for our city during this event will assist our strong future as a successful west coast city”.
