Icing on the CHOGM Cake for the Red Cross
With less than 30 days until the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, CHOGM Taskforce Volunteers Manager Kirsten Drower is cooking up a storm in first place for the Australian Red Cross’ Big Cake Bake fundraiser.
Ms Drower has raised more than $1700 by baking a two-tier chocolate mudcake in the shape of the CHOGM 2011 logo, which features a stylistic shape of Western Australia as flags flying around the Commonwealth globe and Southern Cross.
Ms Drower, a baking enthusiast from Canberra, said it took about 10 hours in the kitchen to whip up her creation, which used 10 blocks of chocolate and 1.5kg of fondant.
“My initial goal was to raise $250 but the support from my colleagues in the CHOGM Taskforce has been overwhelming,” she said.
“There’s currently 1500 registered bakers so to be the most successful fundraiser is the icing on the cake.”
Ms Drower hopes to one day start her own cake business.
“The Red Cross is a wonderful charity and I’m grateful that I’ve been able to make a small difference by doing something I love,” she said.
Donations to support Ms Drower can be made up until the end of October by visiting the Red Cross Fundraising website.
